RON JOHNSON FINE ART
I read a short article in the paper one day in 1977. It said, NASA wanted proposals for projects that the Space Shuttle could fit in a three-foot cubical space. Like, How do plants grow in space? Or, do ants know up from down in space? Projects could be proposed and were chosen for their interest and creativity.
This was the impetus for
“Art for Space” or “Space for Art”.
This idea led to a series of isometric drawings and prints representing the proposed space. I was a printmaker at that time; Lithographic and Intaglio prints.

One series is entitled “The NASA Space Shuttle 1 2 3 4”. Four intaglio prints on D’Arches paper approximately 18x24” each. Here are examples.
Early pieces were proposed as maybe pinball games or attempts to see if I could locate 3D objects in 2D spaces. Some were relatively successful and some not so much. But when you are out there on the edge of space. You never know.
Not only are many of these prints lost in time most are lost in space. As I find images of these prints I will post them.

THE PROCESS
I begin the process with the concept. Art for space or Space for art. I made a simple line drawing of the cube space. Basically, I drew the outline form. Then measured 1” points along those lines. I covered the simple drawing with a clean piece of plastic.
Zipatone is an obsolete graphic design material that would let you place a halftone dot screen across an area of a black and white illustration. It came in a thin plastic film with a slight adhesive over a backing sheet. Using an exacto knife you cut single lines and paste them individually aligning with the measured 1” points. The finished zipatone drawing was placed over a light sensitive material that covered the zinc plate. Exposed to light. the intaglio plate was now covered with an acid resistant layer. The final step, etch the plate in an acid bath. Then ink the plate and run it through a press.
